HERVÁS (Cáceres)

RESTORATION OF LOADING DOCK AND THE BUILDING OF OLD PASSEGER STATION OF HERVÁS AS HOUSING AND LECTURE CENTER.

Historical Overview

The railway track called Astorga-Palazuelo opened in August 1892, involved the creation of a road that followed the original route or Roman road of Via de la Plata, which was perpendicular to radio communications network, typical of a centralized state as was the Spanish in the late nineteenth century. The itinerary, overcome many problems, remained in use about 90 years, in 1985 saw the final elimination of passenger and goods traffic, and thus the tight layout and facilities associated with it, begin a slow but inexorable process of deterioration.

The creation of the network-Palazuelo Astorga was a takeoff sensitive to the economies of northern Extremadura at the end of the nineteenth century. The final decade of the twentieth Century and early twenty-first Century should serve to Guild on the heritage railway for other uses.

The shelter and Interpretation Centre of the railway in Extremadura: the initial state and the intervention

These two buildings was parallel to the railroad tracks, with structure and formalization widespread in all railway stations in cities like Hervás: the loading dock and the passenger building.

The loading dock of the whole, with dimensions of 20 x 11 meters, is an open space of tall gable with opening holes in the longitudinal walls, built of plastered Stone walls and wood structure with a roof truss vain. The passenger buildings, construction of a gabled rectangular with dimensions of 20 x 8 meters and a typology of loculated spaces.

The intervention consisted in adapting the loading dock and the building as a shelter for passengers and visitors' center. The loading dock has been a high partitioning to increase the usable area of the establishment. The construction has been carried out through a light structure of beams, slabs and columns coated metal panels, wood chips and inserted inside the large container ship involved in the original floor. Reminiscent of a large storage boxes and packages within the immense loads on their spring run-up to the loading or unloading in the train car. Have been respected by both the historic building,

Distributing the program as it would lodge a disorderly group of volumes located furniture here temporarily with separate con entrada de luces lights between them.

The shelter features a reception and administrative offices, dining hall and canteen catering, luggage and storage, camarets with 21 seats and services.

The old passenger building has been restored as a center of interpretation of the Railway in Extremadura, eliminating the existing partitioning and leaving an open space for the exhibition, showing the presence of cover original wood trusses. The program is easy with an exhibition hall which generally explains the history of ferocarril and avatars and stories that have suffered in our region, with visitors remember their trips. It is complemented with an audiovisual room, reception and storage.
